A large green woodpecker with a bright orange crest and yellow under the chin, the yellow being less extensive on the female. The head is otherwise dark, with dark chestnut crown. The upperparts are plain greenish-olive, and the tail is black; the primaries are a dark rufous-chestnut colour, barred black. The underparts are dull grey, with no barring. This is a common resident of forested areas throughout the country except the peninsula, the far north, and the central plains.
